How to Insect-proof Your Cabin

August 11, 2016

Insects come with cabin life. I'm going to help you make that fact less terrible.

Spiders don't particularly like lemongrass and citronella. Grab a spray bottle and fill it with water. Add 8-10 drops of each essential oil to the spray bottle and give it a little shake. Spray the concoction around the edges of each room and around the outside of the cabin. These spider traps from Home Depot work incredibly well, but based on the spider population in and around your cabin, you may have to flip them over or change them much more often than what the directions tell you.

Wasps and Yellow Jackets are a giant pain. But lucky for you, they also don't like lemongrass or citronella! They're also territorial and won't build a nest near other nests. That may sound tricky, but luckily, these insects are not the brightest and a simple paper bag will do the trick. Just crumple it a little, place a few drops of each essential oil on a cotton ball and place it in the bag or just place the drops directly into the paper bag. Use string to tie it to a post near your cabin, or, if you want to be extra sure that no wasps will come near your cabin, place a paper bag on every available post.

And of course, take out your trash regularly and keep your screen doors closed.
